DIY heart shaped photo collage for instagram + polaroid photos

I of my goals recently has been to take more than photos of our family, and and so print more of them out. I establish this heart photograph collage art print available from Minted and thought it would be a great manner to get some of my photos off my phone and up on my wall, but I'm a cheapskate. It'due south probably not news to any of you that I wasn't too interested in spending $200 on i framed print. With just a little work, I was able to recreate this eye shaped photo collage for about $forty. It turned out to exist a very easy project that would make a great souvenir.

(Minted sells these prints in 16×16 for $135 framed or 24×24 for $212. My version is 20×twenty, then my $forty toll is about a quarter of their cost.)

I went back through photos from the past year or so and picked out ones that had at least two of our family members together to combine into this collage. I love how it turned out!

How to make a center shaped photo collage

Here's are the details:

  • I used a combination of phone photos and photos from my camera. Since there were all from different occasions and had lots of dissimilar colors, I used the same photoshop action on each 1 to requite them yet feel. If you lot're using exclusively phone photos, try running them all through the same instagram filter.
  • I printed my photos as "polaroids" to mimic the wait of the original print. I ordered my photos from Persnickety Prints and chose the 3×4 retro polaroid option. (I love Persnickety Prints because they never fade, even when displayed in direct sunlight!)
  • I ordered my frame from Art To Frames on Amazon. They are MUCH cheaper than large frames anywhere else. I call back the quality is good for the money, but be enlightened that they are not super high quality. The larger size frames come up with very sparse plexiglass instead of real glass in them, and the kickoff 1 I ordered had a chip in the plexiglass. The seller promptly sent replacement plexi. Using thing plexi keeps the frames very lightweight, but if you want real drinking glass, you'll want to await elsewhere.
  • For the groundwork of the photograph collage, I merely used a piece of white affiche board cut to the frame size (twenty×20).

I started past merely arranging and re-arranging my photos on the poster lath bankroll until I created a heart shaped collage. I used 25 3×4 polaroid prints.

Photos arranged in heart shape on the board

Once I liked the arrangement, I use a little roll of masking tape to tape each photograph in identify. I simply pulled up each photo gently and slid the masking record below it so I didn't mess up the entire arrangement each fourth dimension I taped a photo down. I'd originally planned to use mucilage dots instead of masking tape, but I couldn't find whatever. Turns out masking record was a better pick, because in one case all the photos were adhered downward I realized I wanted to conform the placement of a few – that was easy to exercise with masking tape.

Considering I knew I'd have the display backside glass/plexi in a frame, I didn't worry about making certain the photos were completely adhered down. If you want to frame this display without glass, you'd probably want to employ an adhesive runner all effectually the edges of each photograph.

In nigh one-half an hour, my DIY center shaped photo collage was washed and ready to hang.
